Claim: A screenshot of a weather graphic reportedly from a weather analysis website Tropical Tidbits circulating on Whatsapp claims there will be a wave of extremely hot weather in Southern Africa from the 4th of December 2024.
Is this true or false?
Verdict: True
Forecasts from the Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe show a spike in temperatures from 4 December 2024 onwards with temperatures hitting highs of between 35-40oC. The highest temperatures are projected to be recorded in Gwanda, Chiredzi and Kariba as the country experiences a dry spell.
The Department encourages the public to stay hydrated and to avoid exposure to direct sunlight, noting that those who need to be outdoors for a prolonged period should wear a sunhat or have an umbrella. On the agricultural front, farmers are advised to irrigate crops when heat stress is noted.
