Claim: An image circulating on various social media platforms claims vendors at Mbare Agricultural Market in Harare are selling a maize variety from China which matures within a month.
Is this true or false?
Verdict: False
The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development has dismissed the claim as an old fake story being circulated again. Adding that, the ministry has not registered a maize variety of this kind and to the best of their knowledge, there is no such seed being sold on the open market.
According to PubMed Central, the variety of maize in the post is commonly known as Waxy maize usually found in South-East-Asia maturing after 60 days and not a month as claimed above.
