Fact Check: Image of “dangerous” macaroni is false!

Claim: An image circulating on social media claims Springo macaroni, a brand of pasta imported from Libya is causing people to develop blisters all over their bodies. The image has a message warning viewers not to buy the ‘cheap’ macaroni as it is dangerous.

Is this true or false?
Verdict: False

The above claim is false and malicious, as there is no scientific evidence linking the symptoms presented to consumption of the pasta.

ZimFact has established that this is not the first time that this claim has popped up on social media. A reverse image search shows another instance in July 2024 on Facebook,  a similar post was debunked for falsely linking Springo Macaroni with Mpox symptoms.

This brand of macaroni is manufactured by Al Dafniya Complex for Food Industries in Libya which carries various food safety badges which include accreditation from the; Food Safety Management System ISO22000, the Quality Management System ISO9001, and the Libyan Quality Mark.

Such disinformation is common when a new product enters a competitive market.
