ZESA Holdings posted an update on the country’s power supply situation on 24 August 2024 highlighting that the national power grid is currently experiencing reduced electricity generation capacity due to a technical challenge that occurred at Hwange Thermal Power Station’s Unit 8. This has prompted the power utility to implement increased loadshedding to balance electricity supply and demand.
So, what is the power utility doing to address power supply issues?
The electricity supply authority outlined the following measures to boost power generation and diversify Zimbabwe’s energy mix:
- Partnerships to repower Hwange Units 1-6
- Investment in four new units in Hwange to add 1200MW
- Plans for a1800MWh battery storage system to provide 3 hours of 600MW
- Preparation of multiple sites for solar power generation and studies to develop solar projects through partnerships.
