The Zimbabwe High Court has ruled in favour of an application by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) ‘Interim Secretary General’ Sengezo Tshabangu to bar 23 candidates from running under the CCC banner in by-elections on December 9. Tshabangu had already won an earlier court appeal against his move to recall the 23 from parliament, in a dispute involving CCC leader Nelson Chamisa.
Will the names of the disqualified candidates be on the ballot papers?
Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chief elections officer Utloile Silaigwana said the election management body had withdrawn the ballot papers printed and distributed earlier. He said ZEC would print new ballot papers omitting the disqualified candidates.
What are the disqualified candidates doing about the high court ruling?
The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has filed an urgent Supreme Court appeal against the high court ruling, and hopes the disqualified candidates would be reinstated for the December 9 vote. It is not clear whether the case will be heard before the elections.
