The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has recorded a spike in fatal road accidents during the rain season due to human error. Statistics published by TSCZ show There were 51,107 accidents in 2022, according to statistics published by the council, while 38,482 accidents were recorded between January and September last year. The final 2023 figures have not yet been released.
What is expected of motorists to reduce the risk of accidents:
- Avoid crossing low and unstable bridges as vehicles might be washed away.
- Make sure wipers are working properly and renew worn out tyres.
- Make sure headlights are on preferably on dipped beam.
- Keep a safe braking distance between cars.
- Avoid driving through potholes as this can cause vehicles to skid and crash.
- Drive at low speed make sure fans and blowers are working in order to remove the moisture that accumulates on the windows.
- Drivers are urged to stay focused whilst driving as rain often affects visibility.
- During heavy storms motorists are urged to park their vehicles and proceed with the journey after the rain fizzles down.
